Britannia Mine Museum

Our second field trip of the year was to go to Britannia Mine Museum on the Sea-to-Sky Highway.  After studying several types of mining in class, we were super prepared and ready for this trip.  The students once again did a great job representing our school and made myself and the other parent volunteers very proud.

After seeing the Mine and learning what we could there, we drove to the nearby water treatment plant and learned what is happening to waste from the mining process.  We even got to wear goggles and use some chemicals to extract minerals from the water ourselves! Very cool.

Getting ready to enter the mine–hard hats and all!

Exiting the mine on the other side.  We got to ring the very loud bell to let the other workers know we were leaving the area.

Thankfully, we did not have to climb all those stairs! Here we learned what happens to the rock once it leaves the mine and how the ore is extracted.

Checking the Ph of several water sources.

We also got to pan for gold and climb on the biggest truck we had ever seen!! So much fun.  What a great day!

It was a great trip and we are looking forward to February when we get to go on our third and final trip to the Steveston Salmon Cannery.
